A giant has left this earthly plane. We lost our Dad, Vernon Cheston Mapp, on a cold Friday afternoon.
The youngest boy of thirteen children, raised in Brooklyn, New York, by Bajan parents, he was the walking definition of a fighter. He failed out of the "traditional" American school system. His creative intellect could not fit in a box. With no formal education or money, he managed to use his incredible charm and his gift of gab to work his way into circles that black men in the 60s were boxed out of.
Refusing to be an employee, dad owned numerous businesses throughout his lifetime doing black entrepreneurship long before self-employment was a thing. His greatest professional joy was the hundreds of clients he fought for to get fair settlements for negligent injuries. With no law degree, he became Atlanta's trusted PI, sought out by our community and the most successful attorneys alike for his ability to uncover the details that win cases.
He leaves behind three daughters, a wife of fourty-eight years and five grandchildren. Three daughters, all of whom completed undergraduate and post-graduate degrees. Grandchildren who brought out his rarely seen soft side and who were his greatest joy. May he rest now in eternal peace. We've got this, Dad.
