T.A. was truly a kind, family man. He lived his life with a joyous passion towards everything he did and there was nothing more important to him than his family.
Terry Allen "T.A." was born on Dec 13, 1948 in the small town of Dover Ohio to Monk and Doris Maurer, joining older sister Karen. As a boy he enjoyed fishing and boating at Tappan Lake. That love of fishing continued into his adult years and would take him on many trips fishing for Chinook Salmon. He attended New Philadelphia High School where he played baseball and was a state ranked swimmer.
He went on to swim at West Liberty State College on a swimming scholarship. He held many records in the backstroke. While at West Liberty he was a member of Theta Xi fraternity and it was at one of their events where he met the love of his life, Betsy Wetzel.
After graduation, TA and Betsy were married in a double wedding with TA's fraternity brother, Duane and Betsy’s younger sister Mickey in Wheeling WV on Sept 23, 1972. As a couple they lived in Cincinnati Ohio where TA completed his mortuary science degree while Betsy taught middle school in Norwood, Ohio. They then moved to Wheeling WV, where TA worked as a funeral director and Betsy continued teaching at her Alma Mater, Wheeling Central Catholic High School. TA got a job with Johnson and Johnson which moved the couple to Chicago, Illinois. While traveling extensively in medical sales he acquired another medical certificate at Hahnemann Medical College in Infectious Disease and Clinical Microbiology. In Chicago, they created lifelong friendships with late night card games and many days on the tennis courts.
Eight years after moving to Chicago they expanded their family with the birth of Julia in 1980, and Tommy followed three years later. A promotion for TA moved the family to Atlanta where they would add their “bonus baby” Jimmy in 1988. TA continued to travel in medical sales to all 50 states, but never missed a single important family event. TA loved sports and specifically his kids’ sports. Whether it was dance, soccer, golf, basketball, baseball, tennis, fishing or swimming: he was the biggest supporter. He yelled loudly and loved strongly.
You always knew when T.A. was at the party. He brought a beaming smile and booming laugh. He could always be found in the action and often playing with the kids. He was a favorite uncle, friend’s dad, teammates’ dad, and ultimate friend. He thought he was everyone’s best friend and often left you feeling the same way. He used his positivity to put a smile on the face of everyone he knew and carried that joy over to being a grandpa. He was so proud of all nine grandkids (Brody, Caroline, Scarlett, Cooper, Grant, James, Wesley, Andi, and Vivi) and attended every game, birthday party and important event he could. He also loved his kids' spouses (Patrick, Paige and Kristen) and was the best father-in-law.
We were so blessed to have had the biggest cheerleader in our lives and we will carry his spirit always. He will truly be missed.
TA is survived by his wife Betsy, sister Karen Riggs, daughter Julia (Patrick), sons Tommy (Paige) and Jimmy(Kristen), and nine grandchildren ( Brody Maurer, Caroline Stover, Scarlett Stover, Cooper Stover, Grant Maurer, James Maurer, Wesley Maurer, Andi Maurer, and Vivi Maurer), along with many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. .
