Moses Antonio Valdes

November 5, 1947 – April 29, 2026

Moses Antonio Valdes, beloved pastor, father, grandfather, and servant of God, passed away at the age of 78. Born in Santiago, Cuba, on November 5, 1947, Moses grew up in Havana with a spirit shaped by resilience and faith.

In 1964, at just 16 years old, Moses, his mother, father, grandfather, and his sister Miriam made the courageous journey out of Cuba, leaving behind the Castro regime in search of freedom and a future. They found refuge with family in Spain, and it was there — at only 17 — that Moses heard a calling that would define the rest of his life, Romans 10:14: “…how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?" Reading that, Moses decided he would spend his years bringing the Gospel of Christ to the world, and he never looked back.

That calling carried him to the United States. He went to Harlingen, TX, to learn English and prepare for college. It was there as a teenager where he led a revival, bringing the word of Christ to the first of multitudes of souls he would touch throughout his life.    From there he went to university in Charlotte where he met Marilyn Jamison, who would later become his wife and partner in Christ for 55 years. Continuing his evangelistic mission, Moses earned a Masters of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, and went on to serve as pastor of a Spanish-language Southern Baptist church in Charlotte, NC, shepherding his community with warmth, wisdom, and an unshakeable faith. 

His influence extended beyond the pulpit — After a short time pastoring in Florida Moses moved to Augusta to begin his career as a catalytic missionary.  For 35 years he helped to seed, fund and guide new churches, placing pastors and organizing revivals to spread the gospel faster than one man alone could manage. 

Moses also served on the Board of Trustees for Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary outside San Francisco, contributing his leadership and vision to the broader mission of theological education. His life’s mission was rooted in Matthew 28:19 — to go and make disciples of all nations — and he pursued it with joyful devotion every single day.

Those who knew Moses knew that love was not just something he preached — it was something he was. He believed deeply that God is Love, and that Christ was the ultimate expression of that love, a light meant for the whole world. Moses made it his life’s work to carry that light to everyone he met. The room felt differently when he walked in.

When he wasn’t in the pulpit or among his people, Moses could be found at a canvas with a paintbrush in hand, studying a chessboard, or admiring a beautiful car. He brought the same care and attention to his hobbies that he brought to everything — fully present, fully alive.

Moses is survived by his beloved wife, Marilyn; his sister, Miriam Garcia; his three children, Christie and her husband Josue,  Jason and his wife Shalim, and Aislinn; eight grandchildren, Hailey, Moises, David, Logan, Ryan, Nicholas, Katalina, and Isabella; and five great-grandchildren, Audrey, Leia, Sophia, Hayden and McKinley.

He did not just leave behind a family. He left behind a legacy of love — the kind that points toward something greater than itself.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, at Iglesia Bautista Hispanoamericana in Lilburn, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Language Missions Ministry at Iglesia Bautista Hispanoamericana — a cause close to Moses’s heart and a fitting continuation of the work he devoted his life to.

Moisés Antonio Valdés

Moisés Antonio Valdés, estimado pastor, padre, abuelo y siervo de Dios, pasó a la presencia de su amado Salvador a los 78 años de edad. Nacido en Santiago de Cuba, Moisés creció en Habana con un espíritu forjado por la perseverancia y fé.

En 1964, a tan solo 16 años, Moisés, su madre, padre, abuelo y hermana Miriam emprendieron el valiente viaje fuera de Cuba, dejando atrás el régimen de Castro en busca de libertad y un mejor futuro. En España, encontraron refugio con familiares y fue allí — a los 17 años — donde Moisés escuchó un llamado que definiría el resto de su vida. Romanos 10:14 “¿Cómo, pues, invocarán a aquel en el cual no han creído? ¿Y cómo creerán en aquel de quien no han oído? ¿Y cómo oirán sin haber quien les predique?”Al leer esas palabras, Moisés decidió que pasaría su vida llevando el Evangelio de Cristo al mundo, y jamás miró atrás.

Ese llamado lo llevó a los Estados Unidos. Fue a Harlingen, Texas, para aprender inglés y prepararse para la universidad. Fue allí, siendo aún adolescente, donde dirigió un avivamiento, llevando la Palabra De Dios a las primeras de las multitudes de almas que tocaría a lo largo de su vida. Desde allí fue a la universidad en Charlotte, donde conoció a Marilyn Jamison, quien se convertiría en su amada esposa por 55 años. Continuando su misión evangelística, Moisés obtuvo una Maestría en Divinidad del Seminario Teológico Bautista del Sureste en Wake Forest, y pasó a servir como pastor de una iglesia bautista del sur de habla hispana en Charlotte, Carolina del Norte, guiando a su comunidad con humildad, sabiduría y una fe inquebrantable.

Su influencia se extendió más allá del púlpito. Después de un breve tiempo ministrando en Florida, Moisés se trasladó an Augusta, Georgia, para iniciar su carrera como plantador de iglesias. Durante 35 años ayudó a fundar, financiar y orientar nuevas iglesias, colocando y entrenando pastores y organizando avivamientos para extender el evangelio con mayor alcance del que un solo hombre podría lograr.

Moisés también sirvió en la Junta de Síndicos del Seminario Teológico Bautista Golden Gate, cerca de San Francisco, aportando su liderazgo y visión a la misión más amplia de la educación teológica. La misión de su vida estaba arraigada en Mateo 28:19 — ir y hacer discípulos de todas las naciones — y la persiguió con devoción cada día de su vida.

Quienes conocieron a Moisés sabían que el amor no era solo algo que él predicaba — era algo que él era. Creía profundamente que Dios es Amor, y que Cristo es la expresión máxima de ese amor, una luz destinada a todo el mundo. Moisés se propuso a llevar la luz a todos los que encontraba. Su presencia hacía que cualquier habitación se sintiera diferente.

Cuando no estaba en el púlpito o entre su gente, Moisés podía encontrarse frente a un lienzo con pincel en mano, estudiando un tablero de ajedrez, o admirando un hermoso automóvil. Dedicaba a sus pasatiempos el mismo cuidado y atención que a todo lo demás — plenamente presente, plenamente vivo.

Moisés es sobrevivido por su amada esposa, Marilyn; su hermana, Miriam García; sus tres hijos, Christie (Josué), Jason (Shalim) y Aislinn; ocho nietos: Hailey, Moisés, David, Logan, Ryan, Nicholas, Katalina e Isabella; y cinco bisnietos: Audrey, Leia, Sofía, Hayden y McKinley.

No dejó solo una familia, dejó un legado de amor — el tipo de amor más grande que uno mismo.

El servicio conmemorativo se llevará a cabo a las 2:00pm. el sábado 9 de mayo en la Iglesia Bautista Hispanoamericana en Lilburn, Georgia. En lugar de flores, la familia solicita amablemente donaciones al Ministerio de Misiones de Idiomas de la Iglesia Bautista Hispanoamericana — una causa cercana al corazón de Moisés y una continuación apropiada de la obra a la que dedicó su vida.
