Mildred Nelson Obituary

Mildred Nelson passed away peacefully on April 19, 2023. She was 85.

Mom was born and raised in Canton, NC. She met her future husband, Bob, at the Baptist Student Union at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. They were married in 1957 after her freshman year at UT.

Dad’s work as an electrical engineer for NASA led them to Huntsville, AL, where their children, Nancy and Mark, were born. In 1965, Dad was transferred by NASA to work at what became Kennedy Space Center and they moved to Titusville, FL.

Mom was a wonderful homemaker, an encouraging parent, and a devoted caregiver for Mark. Our family was blessed with wonderful neighbors. Mom especially enjoyed family trips to England, Scotland, and Wales.

Mom completed her degree in English at Florida Technological University (now UCF) in 1974. Later in life, she learned New Testament Greek through a correspondence course. As well as reading her Greek New testament.  She would write household lists and notes in Greek. She was a faithful correspondent who encouraged faraway family.

Park Avenue Baptist Church in Titusville was a wonderful part of mom’s life. Mom sang in the choir, taught preschool Sunday School, and quietly served in many other ways. Their Family Life Group was a source of strength, especially when Mark passed away in 1984 and when Dad passed away in 2009.

Mom moved to Atlanta in 2014 to be near her family. She was well-liked in her new communities and at her new church, Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist. Even as her memory faded, she continued to bring out the best in others and to share her beautiful smile.

Mom was predeceased by her parents, Gudger and Grace Duckett; her brother, Kerry and her sister, Rose Ann; her husband, Bob and her son, Mark. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Kelly; son-in-law. Drew; grandson, Rob and his wife. Melissa; grandson. Kevin; nieces and nephews: Jan, Mark, Amy, Sue, Kelley, Charles and their dear children and grandchildren.
We are grateful to Brighton Gardens of Dunwoody, Solutions For Seniors, Family Private Care, and Arcturus Hospice for wonderful care for mom.

A memorial service will be held at Second Ponce de Leon on Monday, May 22, at 11:00 am with a reception to follow.
