Mary Burns (Burnsie) Mathis, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2024 at the age of 69. Born on October 11, 1954, in Thomasville, Alabama, Burnsie lived a life full of grace, love, and devotion to her family.
Burnsie was the cherished wife of William “Bill” Mathis, a former NFL player and member of the Super Bowl III-winning team, with whom she shared a remarkable life journey. Together, they built a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support for each other.
Burnsie’s life was filled with many accomplishments. A proud alumna of the University of Alabama, she was a spirited cheerleader during her college years. Her passion and energy extended beyond the sidelines, as she was also honored with the title of Miss Lake Demopolis, showcasing her poise, beauty, and charm.
Burnsie’s greatest joy was raising her son, William Hart Mathis Jr., and being a loving grandmother to Liam and Bella Mathis, who brought immense joy to her life. Her nurturing spirit and strong values were instilled in her family, leaving a legacy of love that will continue to inspire those who knew her.
Known for her warm heart, infectious smile, and kindness, Burnsie was deeply admired and cherished by her family and friends, always putting others before herself. Her gentle spirit and loving nature will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Burnsie is survived by her son, William Hart Mathis Jr.; her grandchildren: Liam and Bella Mathis, and a host of extended family and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
A celebration of Burnsie’s life will be held on September 7th at TBA in Atlanta, GA. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation, an organization close to Burnsie's heart.
Burnsie Mathis’s legacy of love, enthusiasm, and kindness will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. She will be remembered as a loving wife, a devoted mother, a proud grandmother, and a true friend. May she rest in peace.
