Margaret Cowan Obituary

Margaret “Peggy” Campbell Cowan, 89, of Decatur, GA, passed away on June 4, 2025. She was known to her family as a loving mother, the world’s greatest grandmother, and the kindest woman one could ever meet.

Peggy grew up near Emory University, graduating from Druid Hills High School. She attended Wesleyan College, and graduated from the Piedmont School of Nursing. Peggy devoted her life to her family and helping others through her long career as a registered nurse and her extensive community involvement and contributions. While Peggy was raised in Atlanta, she loved the mountains of North Georgia, calling Rabun County her home for nearly 25 years.

Peggy appreciated the arts, nature and different cultures and considered herself a lifelong learner. After raising three children and retiring from her job with the state, she returned to college again to pursue her passion for art and study pottery at North Georgia College and State University.

Peggy is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Rebecca Cowan of Cartersville, Georgia; daughter and daughter-in-law, Margaret Cowan and Barbara Katz of Tucker, Georgia; daughter, Mary Cowan Goodhart of Atlanta, Georgia; four granddaughters (and spouses), Allison and Zach Richards, Margaret and Mike Bolton, Margaret and Jacob Bailey, and Emily Goodhart; and, at last count, seven great-grandchildren.

Peggy expressed wishes not to have a formal memorial service. Instead, she asked that her ashes be scattered in the mountains she loved. In lieu of flowers, her family kindly requests memorial donations to benefit children, such as the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and the Special Olympics, or to arts programs, such as the John C. Campbell Folk School.
