John "Papa John" Porubsky was born on November 9, 1949, and entered eternal rest on January 2, 2026. He was a devoted husband, father, friend, brother, and life partner for more than 53 years—a man whose life was marked by faithfulness, humility, and enduring love.
True to the meaning of his name, "the Lord is gracious," John lived a life shaped not by recognition, but by quiet obedience and compassion for others. He was steady in character, generous in spirit, and deeply committed to serving those in need.
For more than five decades, John walked faithfully alongside his wife, Jan, building a life rooted in shared purpose, perseverance, and love. Together, they co-founded Children's Hope International, Inc., a nonprofit organization that for over 20 years has provided care, support, and hope to marginalized women and children in underdeveloped countries. Through this work, John helped sponsor churches, pastors, and sustainable programs in Africa and the Caribbean, always believing that lasting change begins with compassion and faithfulness at the local level.
John was known for his quiet strength, dry sense of humor, and unwavering commitment to the people God placed in his life. He showed up consistently, listened carefully, and served without seeking attention, leaving a legacy of grace, generosity, and steadfast devotion that continues through the many lives he touched. He also worked as a truck driver for over 30 years, including many years with Martin Brower Company, a role he carried out with diligence and pride.
John is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jan Porubsky; his children, Autumn and Jeff Porubsky; his sister, Mary Kay McAmis, and her husband, Dick; and several beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
