Wilbur Gene Howard, of Dunwoody, GA, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 24th, 2026, at the age of 89. He was born on August 20th, 1936, in Burlison, Tennessee. Gene was the son of the late James Vardaman Howard and Laura Howard. His twin brother, Welton and sister, Janie also preceded him in death.
He pursued higher education at the University of Memphis, where he earned a bachelor's degree in engineering. His professional journey led him to a career in customer service and sales with Royal Oak Charcoal. A long-time and avid golfer, Gene spent many of his happiest hours on the course with friends. He also enjoyed his time at his beach home in Seagrove Beach, FL. Most importantly, Gene found his greatest joy in his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Sue Howard; daughter, Suzanne (Gene) Evans; and his two sons, Steven (Payson) Cloys Howard; and William (Dea Thompson) Scott Howard; and grandchildren Grant Howard, Wade (Dana) Howard, Shawn (Julia) Howard, Haylen Evans, and Cameron Evans. Also included in survivors are his sister-in-law, Paula Ward, and his nephews and nieces, Sandy Howard, Burt Howard, Brad (Cindy) Howard, Lindsay Ward, and Taylor Ward.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dunwoody United Methodist Church.
A memorial service will be held Friday, May 29, 2026 at 11 am in the chapel of Dunwoody United Methodist Church. A reception will be held at the church following the service.
