Elana Jade (EJ) Cates, 15, of Chamblee, GA, died unexpectedly February 24, 2021. Elana was born to Mark Cates and Lisa Cates on July 24, 2005 in Atlanta, GA. At the time of her death, she was halfway through her sophomore year of high school, which she attended virtually at Alliance Academy for Innovation. Elana was a very driven and successful student. She was a member of Beta Club and the Director of Expansion for Students Against Voter Suppression. She wanted to study law and business to prepare her to be Speaker of the House one day. Elana was a beautiful girl with a beautiful soul and calming presence. She loved dinosaurs, drawing, photography, sushi, music, making lists, and hanging out with her friends and family. She especially loved cuddling with her puppy, Fresno, and having breakfast with her kitten, Sprite. She was preceded in death by her Opa Paul, Uncle Harald, and Uncle Matt.
She is survived by her mother, Lisa; father, Mark (Bobbie); older sister, Aria; stepbrothers: Reese and Riley; grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. A memorial will be held Saturday, March 13, 2021 from 2 to 5 pm at Fischer Funeral Care in Chamblee. The celebration of Elana's life will continue after the memorial at The Po' Boy Shop Basement Bar at 1369 Clairmont Rd, Decatur, GA, 30033.
