Dulcie Charlotte Gustavson Bowers, age 86, passed away Saturday, January 13, 2024 at Hammond Glen Retirement Community in Sandy Springs, Georgia. She was born in Jacksonville, Florida on February 10, 1937 to the late Blanche Maude Gustavson and Arthur William Gustavson. She grew up in the Riverside neighborhood of Jacksonville, graduating from Robert E. Lee Senior High School in 1955. She pursued a career in Nursing, saying that it was her mission in life to “stamp out disease”, and enrolled at Duke University where she received her BSN degree in 1959. While raising her family, she worked in hospitals and clinics in Bristol, Tennessee and then in Chattanooga, Tennessee until she retired at the age of 83! Many years of her work were focused on helping patients in the behavioral health setting.
Her faith in God was her strength and guiding light. Nothing gave her more joy than her family and hosting Thanksgiving every year! She had an avid interest in traveling abroad, art, dance, theater, opera, classical and choral music. Any chance to entertain family and friends in Chattanooga was a highlight on her calendar. And no visit to Dulcie’s was complete without a walk on the Walnut St. Bridge, a tour of one or more of the scenic city attractions (especially the Tennessee Aquarium), and shopping downtown. All this would be topped off with fine dining in the best restaurants in town.
Dulcie is survived by three sons Thaddeus Ray Bowers, IV (Susan), David Scott Bowers (Julie Strickland), and Michael William Bowers (Amanda), grandchildren Thaddeus Andrew Bowers, Emily Bowers Sartin (Jim), Hines William Bowers, Graham Salter Bowers, and Robert Camden Bowers. She was momma to many kittens, cats, a special dog named Petunia, and is survived by her beloved cat, Nahna.
The family would like to thank the staff of The Haven at Hammond Glen Retirement Community and Weinstein Hospice who lovingly cared for Dulcie in recent months.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, January 20th at 2:00 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrance donations for Dulcie to be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Chattanooga (https://www.stpaulschatt.org), Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church in Atlanta (https://holyinnocents.org/), Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Jacksonville (https://gsjax.church/) or a non-profit animal rescue agency of your choice.
