Carmen "Jeri" Taylor Obituary

                                                                                                Carmen “Jeri” Theresa Taylor

Carmen “Jeri” Theresa Taylor passed away March 7, 2024, at her daughter’s home in Atlanta surrounded by loved ones. She was 94 years old.

Born in Manhattan, New York on July 12, 1929, to parents who immigrated from Puerto Rico about seven years earlier, Jeri left home at a young age with her young sons Tony and Ronnie in tow and headed to Florida where she eventually met and married Sam Taylor. The two of them worked together teaching ballroom dancing—a skill they both enjoyed demonstrating through the years—and it was Sam who gave her the professional name of Jeri to provide some privacy from dance students. They had their first child, Lisa, in St. Petersburg before moving to Atlanta and then to Buford, Georgia where they helped run Sam’s parent’s restaurant for years. Her last two children, Scott and Lynn, were born during this time. After Sam’s death, she met Charles Spinks who became her last love. They were partners for 25 years until his death.

Growing up in very humble conditions, Jeri seemed motivated over the course of her life to achieve competence and success in her work. When the restaurant in Buford closed, she worked mostly in department stores until she took a position at what is now known as America’s Mart in Atlanta. In the key room, releasing keys to vendors throughout the building, she learned how the Mart functioned. She proved herself skilled and able to handle the details of the building and vendors and was promoted to increasingly responsible roles. Before retiring, she worked at the Mart for 37 years and was involved prominently in much of the development and expansion of it during that time.

Her attention to detail and precision was evident in other parts of her life as well. Known for her fashion style and youthful appearance, her children became accustomed to hearing even strangers comment on her style or young-looking face. Youthful in spirit as well, she adored her grandchildren.

Jeri was preceded in death by her son Ronnie Angelet, Samuel Taylor, and Charles Spinks. She is survived by Dolores Betancourt (sister); her children Anthony Angelet, Lisa Taylor, Scott Taylor, and Lynn Taylor Olekas; grandchildren Noah Taylor, Brooke Taylor, Maggie Angelet, Anne Marie Strauss, Nicholas Taylor, Carmen Olekas, and Samantha Olekas and greatgrandchildren Henry Taylor and Louie Strauss.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11am, April 13, 2024, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2461 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, GA. Because she loved dogs so much, the family has suggested that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to the Dekalb County Animal Shelter: https://dekalbanimalservices.com/donate/
