It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of CJ Wheat on September 7, 2024, in Brookhaven, Georgia. Born in Lexington, Mississippi, CJ lived a life of service, love, and adventure. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Michelle Lewis; his sister, Geneva Thigpen; and his parents, Alma Powell and Clarence James Wheat.
CJ proudly served in the United States Air Force for over 20 years, retiring as a Master Sergeant. After his military career, he continued his dedication to the United States as a Civil Servant for the Department of Defense, retiring at the age of 56. He spent most of his life in California, traveling the world and recently visiting his 49th U.S. state.
He is survived by his children: Earnestine Rule of Chicago, IL, Carmen Lawson of Chicago, IL, Nathaniel Wheat of Denver, CO, Clarence J. (Yvette) Wheat III of Topeka, KS, Michael (Rashida) Wheat of Sacramento, CA, Ramona (Tim) Jarrett of Greensboro, NC, David (Shannon) Wheat of Atlanta, GA, and Christopher (Lilybeth) Wheat of Los Angeles, CA. CJ was also a devoted grandfather and great-grandfather, who found great joy in his family.
In retirement, CJ embraced his love for fishing, playing cards, and spending time with his grandchildren. He cherished family moments, creating lasting memories for generations.
In his final months, CJ celebrated one last Father’s Day surrounded by family, enjoying a southern meal reminiscent of his mother, Big Mama’s cooking. During his last weeks, he found peace hearing from his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, children, and friends.
A military funeral with honors will be held at Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Dr, Canton, GA 30114, on Friday, September 27th, at 9am.
As we remember CJ’s life, we take comfort in the words of Mahalia Jackson:
“When my way grows dreary
Precious Lord, lead me near
When my life is almost gone
At the river I will stand
Guide my feet, hold my hand
Take my hand, precious Lord,
And lead me home.”
Though he will be deeply missed, CJ Wheat’s legacy of love, service, and dedication to family will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Rest in power, CJ. You are now with the angels and back in the arms of your mother, Big Mama.
