Andrew Murphy Obituary

Andrew Francis Murphy, 64, passed away on September 9, 2026. He was born on June 4, 1962, in Teaneck, New Jersey, to the late Frank and Anita Murphy.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Julie Murphy; his two sons, Joseph and Raymond; his brother, Paul Murphy and his wife, Deb, and their children, Shelby and Matthew; and his sister, Louise Murphy and her children Lindsay and Aidan Murphy.

Andy spent 35 years working at CNN as a broadcast engineer, building a long career in the television industry and won multiple Peabody awards for his broadcast work. His work often involved shift schedules, but when he was home, he enjoyed spending time with his family, particularly watching sports with his sons and his cat, Butters.

Sports were one of Andy’s great passions. He loved watching almost any sport, with a particular love for Premier League soccer and Georgia Tech athletics, for which he was a devoted and often rabid fan. He also loved to play golf and enjoyed the camaraderie and competition that came with it.

At family gatherings and parties, Andy loved bringing out his acoustic guitar to sing—a passion that inspired both of his sons to pick up the instrument themselves. Whether playing favorites like Guster’s "Satellite," Death Cab for Cutie’s "I’ll Follow You into the Dark," or classic Bruce Springsteen, his music was a fixture of home life. He also shared a love for video games with his sons, enjoying the strategy and challenge of games ranging from early memories playing Oddworld on the PS1 to deep strategy games like Civilization and RimWorld.

Those who knew Andy best will remember his wicked sense of humor and quick wit. He loved nothing more than cracking up his friends with a perfectly timed joke or observation.

He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, and especially by those who shared his love of sports, golf, laughter, a stiff drink (or his signature Bud Lite) and a good argument about the game. He really missed his calling not being a sports announcer, because he was always one step ahead of the action.

In accordance with his wishes, Andy is being cremated and there is no formal funeral service planned.  His wife will be organizing a celebration of life sometime in the fall when friends and family will be notified.
